Most of you would have seen Tyler Peterson
's Post on Teenagers of Quora
about age dismissal. For context, it was in response to his answer to Guns and Firearms: Are there any other democratic countries, besides the USA, that allow their citizens to routinely carry guns?
Yeah, so the end of his answer had some dubious statements, but otherwise the other three fifths of his answer answered the question. That's sort of expected on Quora, the question answered with a bit of an objective.
At this point, if you didn't know that Tyler was a teenager, you probably wouldn't have cared. Given him an upvote or downvote if you wished, or commented regarding an error or thanked him. In fact, most people would have done exactly the same thing even if they did know that Tyler was a teenager.
But then it happened. Tyler's answer was dismissed by someone because
he is a teenager. To make it perfectly clear, it's not the idea that Tyler's answer was dismissed that's the issue here, it's the fact that it was done because of his age.
To make it even worse, the person then tried to validate their reason for dismissing his age. Which is just plain crazy. Trying to validate age discrimination is about as logical and reasoned as trying to validate sexism, racism and religious descrimination. It is just plain crazy.
To the person who did make the comment on Tyler's answer, I hope that you think long and hard about what you said and did. You can work out who this person is by looking at the comments on Tyler's answer, but given their position in the world I think they should be thinking even longer and harder than anyone else upon what they said. For someone of their stature, it isn't acceptable.
Look, if you don't want other people contributing to Quora based upon their demographic, then I hope that you keep those ideas to yourself, and think long and hard about whether they are reasonable beliefs to hold. I have been on the recieving end of ageism many time while I've been on Quora and it isn't nice. The very idea that you can tell someone's intelligence and experience simply based upon the number of years they have been alive is crazy.
